Everything you need to know about microneedling

Everything you need to know about microneedling!

Instead of looking good for just a few days like after a facial, microneedling builds collagen and thickens the skin – so you’re going to glow and have smooth skin for much longer after microneedling. Here’s an inside look at everything you want to know about microneedling from Dr. Hanson in Tampa, FL.

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a non-invasive treatment designed to stimulate collagen production in your skin. This helps to rejuvinate and smooth tired skin and minimize fine lines and wrinkles. “Out of all of the aesthetic treatments available, microneedling is my favorite. I haven’t found a better option to help your skin to stay youthful” says Dr. Josh Hanson in Tampa, FL.

A medical device with 12 micro-needles is used to create small channels (0.5mm-2.5mm deep) on the top layer of the skin which stimulate the body to create new collagen and elastin. These channels also help to deliver growth peptides and vitamins to deeper layers of your skin to help refresh and rejuvenate it.

What Happens During a Microneedling Treatment?

The treatment begins with a gentle cleansing, then your physician will apply a numbing cream for 10-20 minutes. At Dr. Josh Hanson’s microneedling clinic in Tampa, FL, he uses this time to add Red Light Therapy. After the numbing takes effect, your doctor will apply a serum (usually hylauronic acid based).

A microneedling pen is used to glide back and forth across the skin to create micro-channels. The procedure is quick and only takes 10-15 minutes to treat your entire face and neck. After the procedure another layer of serum is applied and at Dr. Hanson’s office a custom mask is applied to help calm inflammation and redness.

Does Microneedling Hurt?

It sounds like a machine with 12 small needles would hurt but the numbing cream and quickness of the procedure make it really comfortable. Expect a tiny bit of pinkness, kind of like a sunburn for 1-2 hours after the procedure. By 1-2 weeks your skin will look and feel amazing!

What is Microneedling Good For?

It’s amazing at smoothing out skin – so if you want to have a glowing look all the time that lasts then you should try microneedling. It’s also amazing for acne scars and it can even help to make pores smaller looking.

Microneedling is one of the best anti-aging skin treatments because it’s results are permanent and last!

How Often Should I Get Microneedling Done?

It really depends on your skin and what your goals are. If your skin is something you care about and you’ve put some time into it already then 3 treatments spaced out once a month is the general recommendation. If you have acne scars you’ll likely need 6+ treatments, depending on the severity.

After your initial series of treatments, you should get a touch up at least once a year to keep things refreshed.

What Should I Do After a Microneedling Treatment?

Dr. Hanson says, “We follow up each microneedling treatment up with a soothing mask (where we can also add more peptides) that helps to soothe the skin and then you leave with an amazing sterile cream on your face to enhance the effects of the treatment”. Expect a little pinkness and for your skin to look like it had a sunburn for a couple hours after treatment – but that will go away quickly. The following few days just use a gentle and hydrating serum to keep your face moisturized and in a week your skin will look amazing!

What Should I Look For Before I Try Microneedling?

“A lot of places won’t do a mask or serum, or even numb the patient,” Dr. Hanson says. “You should ask if they numb, if they use a growth factor serum, if they use a mask, and if aftercare is provided. These all help to get the best result.” (And may result in a higher price, FYI.)
