Headache & Migraine Treatment in Tampa, FL

Many chronic headaches are not generated in the head at all. Trigger points in the neck and shoulders, irritated occipital nerves, and jaw problems all refer pain into the skull in well-mapped patterns — and all of them are treatable tissue.

Find the generator first

Where headaches actually come from

Suboccipital and trapezius trigger points The classic generators — they refer pain into the temples, forehead, and behind the eyes.
Cervicogenic drivers Irritated upper-neck joints and muscles send pain upward — “neck headaches.”
Occipital nerve irritation Nerves at the base of the skull create shooting, burning head pain.
The jaw Masseter and TMJ problems refer into the temples and face.
A sensitized nervous system Long-standing headache patterns keep the alarm system stuck on.

These need different treatment — which is why your first visit is a hands-on Pain Mapping Visit: palpation, movement testing, and targeted examination designed to reproduce your familiar pain and find the tissue that matches your actual complaint.

Questions, answered

Headaches & Migraines, explained

Can neck problems really cause headaches?

Yes — cervicogenic headache is a recognized diagnosis, and trigger point referral into the head is one of the best-mapped patterns in pain medicine. If pressing a spot in your neck or shoulders recreates your headache, we have found something treatable.

Do you treat migraines or just tension headaches?

Both. Acupuncture has solid research support for reducing migraine frequency and intensity, and many “migraine” patients also have a large neck-driven component that responds to targeted treatment.

I've had headaches for years. Is that too long?

No. Long-standing patterns often involve a sensitized nervous system on top of the original generator, which is why the plan may combine tissue-level treatment with calming input like electroacupuncture. It takes a runway, but chronic does not mean permanent.

Will you tell me if something more serious is going on?

Yes. Headaches with red flags — sudden onset, neurological changes, a pattern that does not behave like a musculoskeletal problem — get referred out promptly. Mapping honestly includes knowing what is not ours to treat.

How do I start?

Book a Pain Mapping Visit ($150). We map the likely generators, treat the target the same day, recheck your response, and build your plan.

Meet your doctor

Dr. Josh Hanson, DACM

I’m the doctor people come to when pain has become something they thought they had to live with forever.

My approach is simple: map the painful tissues with a thorough hands-on exam, identify the exact muscle, tendon, joint, fascia, or nerve creating the pain signal, and treat that target directly using the best tool for the job. Many patients tell me I’m the first doctor who actually took the time to put his hands on the painful areas instead of just looking at images.

Over a decade in practice and more than 35,000 procedures later, I’ve treated patients other clinics gave up on.
