Can Acupuncture Help With PCOS?

Can acupuncture help with PCOS

PCOS is such a common problem these days that 1 out of 10 women will be diagnosed with it each year. It is one of the main contributors to infertility in America. The good news is that acupuncture is proven to help with a number of the problems that PCOS causes. As a fertility acupuncture specialist in Tampa, FL, I help women who have PCOS every single day. Let’s dive into how acupuncture helps with PCOS and as a result can help with the problems PCOS causes such as infertility, weightloss, irregular periods, and anovulation. First let’s review the fertility equation (what it takes to get pregnant) then let’s dive into how acupuncture helps the 4 most common problems from PCOS.

Fertility Equation

To get pregnant either naturally or with IVF there are 3 important components that are necessary.

1. A healthy egg

2. A healthy and receptive uterine lining

3. Healthy sperm

If one or all of these components isn’t present then its impossible to get pregnant. The good news is that acupuncture and chinese medicine are proven to help all 3. So now we’re caught up on this, let’s talk about how acupuncture helps the 3main problems PCOS causes and in turn how that can improve your fertility.

How Acupuncture can help PCOS

1. Irregular cycles

A key indicator of your overall fertility including your ability to ovulate on your own and to make a healthy uterine lining is having a regular monthly cycle. In my clinical experience with helping hundreds of couples get pregnant, the closer your cycle is to 28 days the higher your chances are of conceiving, it doesn’t matter if its naturally or with IVF.

When a woman comes into my clinic with PCOS a common problem they have is irregular cycles – they could be long (over 32 days or short, under 24 days)

Regular acupuncture can help to normalize your cycle in turn reducing painful periods, PMS, mood swings, anxiety and therefore giving you the best chance at ovulating regularly and increase your fertility potential.

2 . Anovulation (not ovulating)

A common problem with PCOS is not ovulating at all or not ovulating every cycle. Acupuncture has been scientifically proven to stimulate ovulation.

Studies show it takes performing electro-acupuncture 1-2 times a week for a period of 12 weeks.

3. Hormone imbalances

PCOS I’d a problem of hormone imbalances – there are often high testosterone levels, and we often see problems with insulin / glucose levels, LH & FSH levels. Research studies show that acupuncture can be significantly beneficial in balancing out fasting insulin, fasting glucose, testosterone, LH/FSH hormones and in turn increasing pregnancy rates.
